CHAPTER 20

It’s been a little over a week since I’ve been to Nacameto Island. Last time I was here, I had Spark with me, eager for a scratch behind the ears. Now he’s back home with his humans and I wonder if he knows how lucky he was to be assigned to me; he could have just as easily been assigned to Nyx. My stomach tightens at the thought.

I let myself into the research building and take the elevator up to the tenth floor.

“Hello?” I call out as I step into the kitchen, but Evan and Nova aren’t there. Frowning, I walk into the living room and gaze out the windows to the balcony, finding both places empty as well. The rest of his apartment is an open loft, so I can tell he’s not making out with my sister on his bed—and I immediately hate myself for even thinking of that.

I slip back into the glass elevator and head down the floors one by one, looking for Evan’s shock of messy blond hair or Nova’s fading black ponytail.

When I hear laughter, I press the STOP button and step out onto the fourth floor. Evan’s coworker Libby waves at me from her place at a computer but Nova and Evan are laughing so hard they don’t even see me.

Evan’s holding the remote control for his cloud bag, a modified bean bag chair of his own invention. It hovers off the floor, holding my sister. She giggles and squeals as he yanks the controls to send her flying across the room in one direction and then sharply back across the room a moment later. Pure elation radiates from her in all directions. I don’t think she’s had this much fun in, well, ever.

“Okay, okay,” she squeals with ragged breath. “I’m ready to get down.”

“What’s that?” Evan says. “You want to be thrown into the wall?” His thumb slams on the control button and the cloud bag heads straight toward the wall behind him at full speed.

Nova screams. “No. Evan, no! Please no!”

Evan presses the STOP button at the last possible second, and the bag comes to a jolting halt just inches from his own body. Nova’s kinetic energy makes her fly forward, tumbling off the bag. She throws her arms around Evan’s neck. He catches her and lowers her to the ground.

I let out the breath I’d been holding. I am the only one who can wrap my arms around Evan, dammit. Anger tumbles around in my chest, creating a wave of power that bursts out of my body like a force field of rage. My sister jumps. She steps away from Evan, her eyes wide and her smile vanishing.

“Is this why you wanted me to come over?” I ask, my expression blank.

In the distance, Libby snorts. Evan shoots her a look and quickly walks over to me, planting a quick kiss on my lips.

“No, of course not.” He takes my hand and squeezes it. “Let’s go upstairs.”

My sister and Evan join me in the glass elevator.
